How to clear PDF form data

  1. 1

    Choose a fillable PDF

Select a standard AcroForm PDF from your device. Enter its opening password if prompted.

  2. 2

    Review the fields

The tool lists supported fields and selects fields that currently contain answers.

  3. 3

    Choose what to clear

Select individual fields, all fields, or only fields with current values.

  4. 4

    Download a new copy

Clear and verify the selected values, then download the result and check it in your preferred PDF viewer.

Values and defaults

A PDF field can store a current value and a separate default value. Removing only the current value can allow a viewer's Reset Form command to restore an old answer. Selected fields have both forms of stored data removed.

Fields remain usable

The tool preserves supported AcroForm widgets so recipients can type, select options, or check boxes again. It does not flatten the form or turn it into page images.

Local verification

After saving, the output is reopened locally and selected fields are checked again. A successful download still deserves a visual review in the PDF viewer used by your recipient.

Important limits before sharing

This is not redaction. Clearing a field does not remove flattened page text, metadata, comments, attachments, hidden objects, browser downloads, backups, or other copies. Use Redact PDF for visible sensitive content and Remove Hidden Information for stored document data.

Signed and XFA forms require different workflows. Applied signatures are protected from modification by refusing the operation. XFA packages are rejected because their values and dynamic behavior cannot be handled reliably by this browser workflow. Empty signature fields remain in place.

Supported field behavior

Check boxesSelected states and defaults are changed to empty or off.
Radio groupsThe current and default selection is removed.
Choice fieldsDropdown and list selections, including stored selection indexes, are removed.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing form data delete the form fields?

No. Supported text boxes, check boxes, radio groups, dropdowns, and list boxes remain interactive. The tool removes selected current values and stored default values.

Is Clear PDF Form Data the same as resetting a form?

Not exactly. A standard reset action can restore each field's default value. This tool removes both the current value and stored default value for selected fields so old answers do not return through a normal reset.

Can it clear a digitally signed PDF?

No. Saving any modification can invalidate a digital signature. The tool refuses PDFs when it detects an applied signature and asks you to use an unsigned copy.

Does it support XFA forms?

No. XFA forms can store values and behavior outside standard AcroForm fields. Browser PDF libraries do not reliably preserve or clear that data, so the tool stops instead of producing a misleading result.

Can it clear a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the opening password and the document can be unlocked locally. Your password and PDF stay in your browser.

Does this remove flattened answers or sensitive information elsewhere?

No. Text already painted onto a page is ordinary page content, not a form value. Metadata, comments, attachments, hidden layers, revision history in other copies, and content outside form fields also remain.

Are empty signature fields removed?

No. Empty signature fields and push buttons are left unchanged. An applied digital signature causes the operation to stop.

Why should I keep the original PDF?

The output is a rewritten copy. Keep the original for records, verification, recovery, and any workflow that depends on exact document bytes or signatures.
