Choose the right image format

JPG for scans and photos

A practical choice for photo-heavy pages, receipts, and quick sharing. Lower quality reduces file size but can introduce artifacts around small text. JPG does not support transparency.

PNG for text and diagrams

Lossless encoding keeps the rendered text edges and line art intact. Use PNG for forms, charts, or screenshots when clarity matters more than download size. It supports transparent areas.

WebP for web sharing

WebP offers adjustable compression and transparency. It can be useful for website images and online previews. Confirm that your recipient or upload portal accepts WebP before choosing it.

Resolution for US Letter pages

An 8.5 by 11 inch page produces 1,275 by 1,650 pixels at 150 DPI, 2,550 by 3,300 at 300 DPI, and 5,100 by 6,600 at 600 DPI. Doubling resolution creates four times as many pixels and requires more memory.

The DPI setting controls rendering dimensions, not a guaranteed embedded print-resolution tag. Browser-generated files may report 96 DPI in their metadata. Set the intended physical size when printing. A low-resolution source scan will not gain missing detail at higher settings.

Page conversion or picture extraction?

PDF to Images captures the entire visible page. A scanned page containing only text is still exported as an image. This is expected: the tool converts pages rather than identifying photographs.

To save individual embedded pictures, use Extract Images from PDF. To combine images back into a document, use Images to PDF.

Privacy, large files, and output limitations

The PDF renderer and ZIP library load when needed. Documents are processed on your device, and imported PDF scripts are not executed by this tool. Local conversion is not a malware scan or a guarantee that visible sensitive information has been removed.

For long PDFs, select a smaller page range and use 150 or 300 DPI. You can cancel an export and keep your page selection. The tool limits individual canvas dimensions and stops output above 200 MB to reduce memory pressure. Device limits can still prevent complex files from completing.

Keep the original PDF for searchable text, accessibility, interactive forms, links, and signature verification. Review exported pages before sharing, especially unusual fonts, annotations, or form appearances. Exporting images does not preserve these features as interactive content.

Frequently asked questions

Does PDF to Images upload my document?

No. PDF rendering and image conversion happen locally in your browser. The site downloads the software needed to process the file, but your PDF and exported images are not uploaded for conversion.

Which image formats can I export?

Choose JPG, PNG, or WebP. PNG is lossless. JPG and WebP have a quality slider. If your browser cannot encode WebP, the tool asks you to choose PNG or JPG instead of saving a mislabeled file.

Does this extract the original pictures from a PDF?

No. Each selected page becomes a complete image, including visible text, graphics, and scanned content. Use Extract Images from PDF to save embedded pictures instead of whole pages.

What resolution should I use?

Use 150 DPI for screen sharing, 300 DPI for detailed text or printing, and 600 DPI only when extra detail is needed. These settings control pixel dimensions. Image metadata may still report 96 DPI, so set the intended print size in your printing application.

Can I convert scanned or password-protected PDFs?

Yes. Scanned pages are rendered as page images without OCR. Password-protected PDFs require the correct password. Conversion cannot recover detail missing from a low-resolution scan.

Can I export a PDF with hundreds of pages?

Yes, subject to your device's memory and the document's complexity. Thumbnails load as needed and export processes one page at a time. For large documents, use a page range and convert in batches. Oversized pages and output batches above 200 MB are stopped with a message.

Will the images keep clickable links and editable text?

No. Image output contains pixels, not interactive PDF content. Searchable text, working links, editable form fields, bookmarks, and digital signature verification are not preserved. Keep the original PDF when those features matter.

Can PNG or WebP have a transparent background?

Yes. Enable Transparent background to retain unpainted areas. This does not erase white rectangles, scanned paper backgrounds, or other backgrounds already drawn in the PDF. JPG uses a white background.
