Quick start

How to repair a PDF

  1. 1

    Choose the problem PDF

Select one PDF. If it is protected, enter the opening password when requested.

  2. 2

    Review the document check

See whether the file is healthy, has recoverable structural warnings, or can only be recovered from visible pages.

  3. 3

    Choose a repair method

Use structural repair first. Use visible-page recovery only when the original page structure cannot be rebuilt reliably.

  4. 4

    Repair, verify, and download

Create a new copy, let the tool verify its structure and page count, then reopen the download and inspect important content.

Two recovery methods, with different tradeoffs

A production repair workflow should preserve the original document model whenever possible. Converting every page into an image can rescue visible content, but it should be a fallback because it discards useful PDF features.

Recommended first

Repair document structure

The tool reads recoverable objects, reconstructs cross-reference information, rewrites streams and object storage, then checks the new PDF and confirms its page count.

  • Preserves searchable and selectable text when recoverable
  • Preserves images, vector graphics, links, forms, and bookmarks
  • Keeps existing password protection by default
  • Avoids quality loss from rendering whole pages

Fallback method

Recover visible pages

If the browser can render the pages but the original structure cannot be trusted, the tool can build a clean PDF from page images at 150, 200, or 300 DPI.

  • Preserves the visible page appearance
  • Removes text search, selection, and accessibility tags
  • Removes interactive links, fields, bookmarks, and attachments
  • Can create a larger file, especially with PNG pages

What structural repair can fix

PDF readers locate pages and other objects through cross-reference data. Interrupted downloads, faulty generators, damaged incremental saves, incorrect byte offsets, malformed object streams, and stray data can make that structure inconsistent. A repair engine can scan the available objects, reconstruct the index, normalize streams, and write a new copy.

The built-in check distinguishes a clean file, a readable file with recoverable warnings, and a file whose available structure cannot be recovered. A clean result can still be rewritten when a particular viewer, print service, or upload portal rejects it.

What no repair tool can recover

Missing bytes or pagesA truncated download may not contain the objects needed to reconstruct the ending pages.

Destroyed stream dataCorrupted image, font, or page-content bytes cannot be inferred reliably.

Unknown passwordsRepair is not password cracking and cannot bypass encryption without valid access.

External resourcesMissing linked media, fonts, or source files are not stored in the damaged copy.

Standard and broad compatibility output

OptionBest use
Standard rewriteModern PDF readers, smaller structure, and normal document sharing.
Broad compatibilityOlder viewers or systems that reject object streams and cross-reference streams. The file can be larger.

Before using a repaired PDF

  1. 1. Keep the damaged source. Save the original separately in case a specialist or another repair engine can recover additional data.
  2. 2. Reopen the download. Check it in the viewer, browser, printer, or portal where the original failed.
  3. 3. Review every important page. Confirm text, images, page order, forms, comments, bookmarks, and attachments that matter.
  4. 4. Follow submission rules. US courts, agencies, schools, health systems, and employers may impose PDF version, accessibility, signature, security, or file-size requirements.
  5. 5. Sign and protect last. Repair invalidates earlier digital signatures. Obtain the final signature and apply access protection after structural changes.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of PDF problems can this tool repair?

It can rebuild many damaged cross-reference tables, inconsistent object offsets, malformed object streams, trailing data, and other structural problems that still leave the document objects recoverable.

Can every damaged PDF be repaired?

No. No repair tool can recreate bytes, pages, fonts, images, or encryption keys that are missing from the file. A severely truncated or overwritten PDF may be unrecoverable.

What is visible-page recovery?

It renders every page the browser can still display and builds a new image-based PDF. The visual page is retained, but searchable text, links, forms, bookmarks, accessibility tags, and other interactive features are not.

Should I use standard or broad compatibility?

Start with Standard rewrite. Broad viewer compatibility uses classic cross-reference tables and avoids object streams, which can help older software but may produce a larger file.

Will password protection remain on the repaired PDF?

Yes, by default. When the source is encrypted and you supply the correct password, structural repair keeps the same protection unless you clear the Keep current password protection option.

Will digital signatures stay valid?

No. Repair rewrites PDF bytes, so existing digital signatures will not validate afterward. Keep the signed original when signature verification matters.

Does repair remove malware, hidden data, or sensitive content?

No. Repair fixes document structure. It is not malware scanning, redaction, or privacy sanitization. Use Inspect PDF Risk, Sanitize PDF, or Redact PDF for those separate tasks.

Why can the repaired file be larger or smaller?

Rebuilding objects, streams, and cross-reference data changes how the PDF is stored. Broad compatibility and visible-page recovery can increase size. Repair is intended to improve readability and compatibility, not guarantee compression.

Does the PDF leave my device?

No. Structural inspection, repair, page rendering, password handling, and output verification run locally in your browser.
