Quick start

How to sanitize a PDF

  1. 1

    Choose a PDF

Select one PDF from your device. If it is password protected, enter the password when prompted.

  2. 2

    Review the privacy scan

Check the detected metadata, attachments, scripts, comments, links, form fields, signatures, and optional layers.

  3. 3

    Choose a cleanup mode

Use Standard cleanup to preserve searchable content, or Maximum privacy to rebuild visible pages as images.

  4. 4

    Sanitize and download

Create a new PDF in your browser, review the result summary, and download the sanitized copy.

What can be hidden inside a PDF

A PDF can contain much more than the page you see. Document properties can identify an author, company, editing application, or creation history. Attachments can place complete files inside the document. Comments, optional layers, saved form values, page thumbnails, scripts, and automatic actions can also remain after the visible page looks finished.

The privacy scan reports common categories before cleanup so you can make an informed choice. A zero count means the browser did not detect that category through the supported PDF interfaces. It is not a security certification and it cannot account for every proprietary or damaged PDF structure.

Recommended

Standard cleanup

Rewrites the PDF, removes common hidden and active data, and preserves searchable text, vectors, images, and internal page links when possible. You can decide whether to remove comments, website links, accessibility structure, and interactive form behavior.

Strongest cleanup

Maximum privacy

Renders page content without annotations, then creates a new image-only PDF. Hidden layers and underlying objects are not copied. The tradeoff is loss of searchable text, links, forms, bookmarks, accessibility tags, and compact vector content.

What the Standard cleanup controls do

SettingEffect
MetadataRemoves document information dictionaries, XMP metadata, editing details, and embedded page thumbnails.
Embedded filesRemoves document attachments, associated files, and file attachment annotations.
CommentsRemoves notes, highlights, stamps, drawings, popups, and supported multimedia annotations.
Form flatteningTurns supported visible field appearances into static page content and removes field interactivity.
External linksRemoves website and email link annotations while retaining internal navigation when possible.
Structure tagsRemoves accessibility and logical reading structure. Leave this off unless your workflow specifically requires removal.

Sanitization is not redaction

Sanitization targets nonvisible, attached, or active information. It does not identify Social Security numbers, medical information, financial details, or confidential wording on the page. Covering content with a white rectangle is also not secure redaction because the underlying text may remain recoverable.

For a release copy, first use Redact PDF to permanently remove visible sensitive areas. Then sanitize the redacted file to remove selected metadata, attachments, comments, and active features. Review the final copy before distributing it.

A practical sharing checklist

  1. 1. Keep the original. Store the source separately if you need editing history, accessibility, form behavior, or signature verification later.
  2. 2. Finish visible edits and redaction first. Sanitization should normally be one of the final preparation steps.
  3. 3. Review the scan and settings. Do not remove accessibility structure or useful links unless your sharing requirements call for it.
  4. 4. Open the downloaded copy. Check every important page, form value, image, and link in a separate PDF viewer.
  5. 5. Apply protection last. If the recipient needs an opening password, use Password Protect PDF after sanitization.

Frequently asked questions

What does PDF sanitization remove?

Standard cleanup can remove document metadata, embedded files, comments, page thumbnails, JavaScript, unsafe actions, XFA logic, external links, and accessibility structure. It can also flatten form fields. The exact result depends on the settings you choose.

What is the difference between Standard cleanup and Maximum privacy?

Standard cleanup rewrites PDF structure while preserving searchable text and most visible content. Maximum privacy renders each page without annotations and rebuilds a new image-based PDF. This more thoroughly discards hidden page content, but it also removes search, selection, links, forms, bookmarks, and accessibility tags.

Is sanitizing the same as redacting?

No. Sanitizing removes selected hidden or active document data. It does not find sensitive words or permanently cover visible content. Use the Redact PDF tool to remove visible text or page areas, then sanitize the redacted copy before sharing.

Does this tool scan for malware?

No. The tool removes common active PDF features and rewrites the file, but it is not antivirus software and cannot certify that a malformed or proprietary PDF is safe. Follow your organization's security procedures for untrusted documents.

Will digital signatures remain valid?

No. Sanitization changes the PDF bytes, so existing digital signatures will no longer validate. Keep the signed original if signature verification matters, and sign the sanitized copy only after cleanup is complete.

Can I sanitize a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. The password prompt and document processing run locally in your browser. The downloaded sanitized copy is not encrypted unless you protect it again afterward.

Does the PDF leave my device?

No. Inspection, page rendering, cleanup, and PDF creation take place in your browser. The file is not uploaded to a conversion server.

Why can the sanitized file be larger?

Rewriting object streams can change compression. Maximum privacy stores each page as an image, which can make a compact digital PDF much larger. Choose 150 or 200 DPI when file size matters.
